Hojicha Roasted Bancha Green Tea (Caffeine)

Hojicha is a Japanese Bancha green tea, picked after Sencha, that is roasted over charcoal, giving it a toasted brown color with a nutty flavor and essence of mesquite. The process of roasting the tea over charcoal lowers its caffeine content, making this an ideal tea for those looking for all of the benefits of green tea but without higher levels of caffeine.

Hojicha is available in 1.5 oz and 3 oz resealable pouches. This tea contains a low level of caffeine.

What is Bancha Green Tea?

Bancha, known as "common tea," represents a type of sencha with a lower grade that is typically harvested during the second and third crops in the warmer months of summer and autumn. The distinction between Sencha and Bancha lies in the leaves' size and stem content. While the larger leaves and upper stems are usually discarded in the production of sencha, they become the key components of Bancha.

During the harvesting process, the larger, coarser leaves and stems are collected, giving Bancha a unique appearance compared to the more refined and delicate sencha leaves. This inclusion of larger leaves and stems contributes to the tea's distinctive flavor profile.

In terms of taste and aroma, Bancha differs from sencha. Due to the presence of larger leaves and stems, Bancha tends to be less aromatic than its counterpart, sencha. However, it compensates with a notable astringency, creating a refreshing and invigorating experience for tea enthusiasts.

Despite being considered a lower grade of tea, Bancha holds its charm and has gained popularity for various reasons. For one, its affordability makes it an accessible option for tea lovers who seek the goodness of green tea without breaking the bank. Additionally, its robust and straightforward flavor appeals to those who appreciate a more rustic and down-to-earth tea experience.
